ABOUT US

ASPA

Background

ASPA was born in 2023 when a group of Commonwealth Scholars from Bangor University, Wales, came together during an agroecology field research program in Uganda. Inspired by the resilience of farmers and the potential of sustainable farming systems, the team collaborated on cross-country agroecology research in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia, under the EU-funded TRANSITIONS Programme led by CIFOR–ICRAF and partners.

In 2024, the group expanded to include more scientists and practitioners across Africa, united by a shared vision: to transform farming systems through science, innovation, and sustainability. This collaboration evolved into the Alliance for Sustainable Pathways in Africa (ASPA)—a pan-African platform dedicated to advancing agroforestry, sustainable agriculture, and nature-based enterprises that strengthen livelihoods and restore ecosystems.

Mission

To design, demonstrate, and scale sustainable farming and agroforestry systems that improve food security, restore ecosystems, and enhance the livelihoods of farming communities across Africa.
